Singapore Canoe Marathon 2009

Burst! Draft! Grit! Power Up! Portage! Compose!

... But can your butt stand the turmoil?

Well well well. As much as the motivation could falsify one into believing that the marathon route this year is still the same distance upon seeing the new route, GOOGLE EARTH reveals all! Ok the route for this year's race was shortened a little but racers has to go more rounds. For eg. in senior men, previously it was 5 rounds, 4 portages. Now, it's 8 rounds and 7 portages. Wooohooo, 7 portages is daunting enough, not to mention 8 rounds. Hahah.

Ok so please take a look:

Biao first went to measure and he raised that it was looong. And so, I followed as closely to the diagram as possible and here it is. The 1st round is already freakin' 6.6km!

4 rounds and freakin 26km! OH MY GOSH. Senior men, 52km! Bleah, no joke man!

(All the senior rowers will freakin' have baboon butts and have their nuts roll off. tssssk)

Hmmm OK OK, so maybe, maaaaybe, There would be a shorter turning before the barrage, so here it is:

But still, it's only a 300m difference? One round is still 6.3km..

And for the Novice category rowers, 3 rounds, 17.54km. Mmmhmm interesting.

Let's see if there'd be changes come the team manager's briefing this Thursday. Heh, but whatever it is, one thing i'm sure about this race.

Guess it's a great time for everyone to meet up and chill out just before we enter another hectic year of 2009 ahead of us! (Ok maybe except those who get slacker posts for NS, but everyone's aiming for OCS isn it. hurhur)

Basically, nearest MRTs are:

2) Bukit Batok

1-- Clementi

From Clementi, take 184 at the bus stop on the opposite side of the interchange (which is a construction site now), where the HDB buildings are. 20 minutes ride

2-- Bukit Batok

From Bukit Batok, take 852 from the interchange. 10 minutes ride.

Direct buses:

67, 75, 170, 171, 173, 184, 852, 961

Not-so-direct-buses: (meaning you either gotta walk a little, approx. 600m or you gotta change to another bus)

985, 970, 61, 66, 52, 151, 154, 157, 174, 74

985 goes to school so if you live around school area or have any convenient buses from school, take it (: It's a 600m walk from my house to bus stop btw.
From/To the east:

1) One bus route - 66 to bedok, 67 to tampines: freakin imba long 1.5 hour journey. (faster at night, maybe an hour)

2) Two bus route - 985 to school area> 23 to tampines: 1 hour journey (dependant on bus arrival times, bus travels much faster at night tho. Both buses go by the expressway)

From/To central area:

1) Serangoon people - 985 to PIE (CJC), then 156 or 105 to serangoon

2) Hougang people - 74 to Bukit Timah, then change to 67,171,170,961,852

3) Toa Payoh people - 157. (gotta walk the 600m from bus stop to place)

4) Bishan, Thomson area - 52 [route is quite complicated, for those taking this bus, please meet up with ChenYang or just call me direct]

From/To west:

1) Clementi - 184

2) Jurong west - 157,174

If you're not breathless yet, something's wrong with you. HAHA

The sleek and sexy C1. Wooh. See, you can see the grass' reflection on the hull. (Aaron, raymond, please study hard first. Haha)

Alright, went to receive all these babies. Super nice Nelo Vintage K1, 10 of them. Wooh. And jiaolian's marathon Vintage ML, crazy 8.1 kg only. The above 'training boats' weigh from 10.8 to 11.6kg. Feels damn good to paddle in, even after losing all that skill and fitness, all it takes is like 5 minutes?! to get back in shape. (well of course, not our standard stroking, hurhur) It has the smoothness of a Vanquish, a stability of the Baby K. NICE.

Had a great time in the water, tho it only came after 1 to 2 hours of waiting, admiring, camwhoring, and being excited on land, and doing all the weighing, fixing and everything. Coach must've been the happiest guy on earth. Haha and we were saying Waikit was gonna AWOL from sispec camp if we were to MMS him a picture of his sexaye Vanquish M. Hahha AWOL and kena detention barracks.

Paddling was kinda ok.. couldn't even last for a 100m top speed now. Put yours hands tgt for me cos I'm proudly the FIRST GUY, who has capped in the Nelo Vintage before, thank you very much. Died on the 3rd set of 100m. Ok the waves were damn bad, 2 wakeboarders zooming all the way up to the front, exceptionally dumb.

Wanna know how good it is? You've really gotta try it yourself (:

Hello everybody!

Prelims are over, yeap. Time to pick it up even further, all out!

Like CK said, go grab those results that you so dearly desire. Heh

OK OK, Nelos are finally coming! All 10 of them! Thanks to the delays due to Olympics we didn got to use them pre-season. Hmm, juniors are gonna have hell of a great time. Haha

The boats are either coming down either this coming thursday or friday

Coach needs help to unpack, and check and (i very much think so) TEST. wahah. Ok maybe we're noob as hell alrd but still we can at least use the raptors.

I'm trying to get everyone to come down, and we can relish in those wonderful moments again, train tgt, have fun, then dinner at TM. Haha. Watch out for the relay (:

Anw latest news:

1) You may have got the msg but here it is again. Coach is going to take over Bedok PA Club in November! It's confirmed! Wooo. So he needs ideas flowing in to flourish the club. There'd be a training team, and recrea and all. So keep brainstorming in the meantime.

2) SOUTH ZONE COLOURS (: - Other than the K4 guys, THE WHOLE GIRLS TEAM ARE UP FOR COLOURS! Another milestone in SA Canoeing history! Just 6 girls, the 3rd Batch -climb to 3rd place. Juniors, new benchmark to hit yea? Haha

3) IMPT: Malaysia Trip Dec 9th To Dec 13th. Please confirm with Mr Kieu if you're going by this weekend. There'd be races with the local teams there. I think we can participate if we want to, (well that's if we're fit enough and if we want or not, and whether we are still alive after Stan Chart, hahaha)

Hope prelims were much more smooth sailing this time around!

hello everybody (:

Bear with this ranting, I'm so sorry. haha don't waste your time going on to read this if smth's more impt.
Well then maybe you'd ask me what's impt that i've got to get down with this post, hurh, i dont know, i think it's maybe because you'd be able to relate to it somehow.

From all the moments of unity in being part of the most bonded team ever, we're doomed to this inevitability of individualism.
Individualism in the sense of having the need to imbibe all the knowledge that's essential for us to conquer the A levels. Don't ask why the need to, but who doesn't want 4 As and more? Oh well.
They say that JC life is probably the hardest phase in academia. In my mind, at a moment like this, the clause 'hardest phase' immediately drew a link to individualism.

After some thought and sharing, I think I'm down to this conclusion that JC, with regards to A levels, is all about SELF. Hah first impression after this is that it may be damn ironic but from this i have actually came to realise and appreciate, how blessed we are to belong to this team, how blessed we are to have each other.

Generally, right from inception to college, all the way till now, when everyone's in preparation for the greatest exam, the route here was fun and enriching. I must say i really enjoyed J1-life. Hah but right down to this moment in time, when it's just a mere 2+ months to the A levels, reality is, we're all on our own. Damn, it's a bitter pill to swallow. Damn.

At this point in time, group study and what nots are simply just sessions to get people together, but ultimately everyone's just fulfilling their own goals, their own agenda. Materially speaking, it is covering up their own weaknesses to prime up for A levels. Mentality-wise, we're all just individualistically spurred on not to die out, not to get an ugly set of results.
Most evidently, check out the influx in the library. Scholar classes can pon math revision lectures just because they've got their own revision plans.

Day to day, we're just getting more well-oiled and removing the cogs in clockworks of our knowledge. Surely, it's one great challenge for us to conquer.
And when it all ends, it's liberation, and what really mattered was how much we've improved as person after this hectic 2 years. As canoeists who all belong to this wonderful team, I'm sure it doesn't fail to put a smile on all our faces (:

Let me not nag about how much the system of A levels aren't exactly preparatory for us to get into society next time, maybe just that intensity. But if it's this kind of individualism that we must tackle in order to get knowledge for A levels, what about master degrees and PhD? (ok i know the testing is different, Haha.) Well then maybe, just maybe, individualism is really inevitable. Or maybe it's just these stupid thing called exams. Or maybe it's just that we felt too much bonding as a team, that individualism isn't easy. (well at least for me)

Transition from being a student-athlete to full-time studying was kinda difficult for me. Withdrawal symptoms to paddle lasted long, lucky it's all gone now. The longing to be as a team still warms in your heart, and that i still very much look forward to one day where all of us just get down to Bedok, paddle to our hearts' content, then go for dinner at TM again. Just once again, would be so beautiful. Hahah ;D
All of the lustre, the medals, the victory, the downfalls, the crap, the tears were all there for a reason. I think it's great that as a senior, as we move on, we leave this whole wollop of experience to the j1s to embrace and to find their own fun to it.

I guess i'm moving on, to find more things in life that evoke even greater meaning. I've learnt to accept to be 'unhealthy', that which i dreaded so much after season - losing fitness. Haha. Whatever 41 pulls ups, 140push-ups/per minutes, 9.4+ 2.4, 1.50+ K1 500m, sub 1.40 K4 500m, are just all beautiful things of the past- History. Theyre just material.

I'm beginning to accept the normal lifestyle. And conversely, in my quest of intellectual discovery, it's getting more interesting. Heh.
But like what has been said one million times, it's how much we gain mentally, how much we've developed in these 2 years. At a time like now, it's no longer how long we can last at a 1.40 running pace, our how many sets os 4 minute 1k sets we can do. What really matters now, is that self-discovery and the lenses that canoeing has given. The lenses through which we see what's around us. The realisation of our capabilities and the values that we subscribe to.

Haha I remember the most basic of anyone pushing their limits in fitness, they'd say, "It's all in the mind." But now that's there's another focus, this phrase has another perspective. In our lifestyle transition, It surely is all in the mind that matters, for all of life's other dealings. Paradoxical how we use it? Hmmf. Or perhaps it's just generic and for the long term. Ahh.
Oh yea it's all in the mind, see that thick stack of notes, theyre nestling within your brain cells, all there. Haha. (cos i suddenly got reminded how near are we to the As alrd)

One final race.

One.Final.Race.

Everything was the same- Mac Ritchie, paddles, boat, etc. Only things that's different were being part of combined schools (with the singlet!) and more importantly a revelation, an epilogue and a conclusions.

Poof and there just went NCC. First race at 9, finals ended at 1pm. We were like wth, cos everything was all too fast (except our boat that's yet to oust the rest and be the best)

Heats were bad for us. For one a half years and this being the 5th sprint race, never once had I ever rowed in the first event of the day before, we had insuff warm up and, hell, the timing was bad. Lost to NUS (senior natl team) and the Junior Natl Team ppl. Basket.

So that left us to be 3rd, missing the straight finals chance. Had to race in semis.

But then again, going into semis was a good thing cos it gave us time to get things back in shape. And the rundown was perfect, wonderful feeling, one of the best we ever felt. Jonny was setting the pace for us to conserve. Everytime the 2nd boat came up, he just commands to power up. Kinda like we're racing their race.

Then came finals. Again, all out, 100%, 120%, 150%, everything. Felt great for the race but still, came in 3rd, aft both national team K4s. Tho it was only a nose behind the senior natl team boat, that didn't matter to me, or maybe even so, us. The feeling was tremendous

So then, what revelation? Aft the race I kinda realised, smth which coach mentioned before, something that i'm sure the K4 guys, could easily relate too. "It is only fun when you race with better people." Yeap, his idea. Tho when i first heard it, i thought that's being crazy, but now I'd give honour to those few words.

At that moment in time, pass the finishing line, tho it was the same old medal colour, which I hated a lot and promised to myself never to get it again and to make the next one a shinier one, that piece of metal and it's colour didn't matter to me. What mattered more, was the revelation of where my K4 stands, our K4 stands on this level of playing field, national canoeing champs. No doubt it was Gold Medal at A Divs, and that we were all very happy, having to achieve the goal set out right from more than a year ago, I had this feeling inside me which i couldn explain back aft natls. Happy, surely i was extremely- it was GOLD. But smth just compromised on that happiness, it being not extremely genuine.

Only until now, right after NCC, did i realise, what that thing was. The K4, though fastest among schools, wasn't the best one in Singapore. The inability to say that 'we were really the best' after the A divs compromised on my exuberance, that maximal joy, that anyone was supposed to feel. The results today at NCC, simply show why.

So what if it was Gold? The result stares at you in the face. Stark reality. You're 3rd.

Whatever the hype, whatever the excuses, we're battling it out with people who are the best in the Nation. So what if they rowed 6 years or more and we've rowed 1.5 year? Who cares if it was a nose or a millimetre?

We were behind them and they're better.

But having to come thus far, and achieving such a result really made me satisfied. We're still 3rd only. Yet to reach the top. This feeling would easily ignite some motivation in me to go get it on and continue to strive, with even more fervour and focus. But oh? then came the reminder, NCC is the last race already. Haha.

So here's how it ends, and does it get any better in time to come? (: What an interesting thought to ponder over, my fellow alumnus.

After all, it isn't the gold. It is still about being the best and knowing it genuinely.

Nevertheless, 3rd is still heartening (:

Medals are still metals that mean nothing in 10, 20, 30 years time, they just tell you how you fared in your time. Coach threw away his medals when he shifted his house.(lol)

Most most most most most most most of all it's still you, my beloved team and all the experiences that i love most and will never forget! (:

the seniors came down for k4 200m also, really funny. We were at shore when 2 ppl carrying a k2 coincidentally walked pass and blocked us when their horn blew. The next moment when the k2 moved pass, their boat was like slanted almost 50 degrees to one side! Hahaha. But still, they caught up and got 3rd for their semis :D

anw, ncc's atmosphere is damn dead, no one cheers. The first cheer i heard was from the sec sch team ppl only aft 1pm. bleah.

k then jon and jack were talking about the big eye girl. errhmm. S^2. lol and jon couldn find a way to talk to her despite the want to. awwwh man.

cjc coach said smth about our girls k2, rather bad and unjust, shows of his sheer jealousy and bad-loser spirit.

during prize pres, jack saw smth and immediately told me. lol he saw clarence and GPS downing some Heineken. haha

Woooh. Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.

Haha ok random, but gosh can you believe it, exactly NEXT TUESDAY, we're gonna be down at Mac Ritchie, paddling our hearts out. Motivational stuffs aside, wow, i can't believe the reality of us having to hang up our paddles after Nats. Not in the sense of stopping kayaking for good, but toning down for the As. I'm sure to have withdrawal symptions after Nats- to get my hands on coach's sleek jantex paddle and burst my hearts outs with it. Damn i'll really miss all the times in the water - the mass starts, the will to keep composed for long distances, the drafting, the non-stop effort, the burst-offs, the non-stop %s. And everything ending with smiles of satisfaction, feelings of victory and lots of chatter over meals and on the rides home.. My longing for these to last forever... even when we come back to train with the club next time, and watch the J1s own each other in their Nelo TRAINING boats. Ahh, the future, let's behold.

Hmmmf but as much as possible, let's try to leave these feelings all to after Nats and in the meantime, pure focus (:

We've got serious business. I believe in terms of process, it's been very much enjoyable and satisfying, thinking back about everything will buff your heart up.

Let's cap off this breathtaking experience, to have something even nicer to relish about for your lifetime from next friday onwards, hopefully with something shiny hanging over your neck. But more imptly, that everlasting memory of having belonged to one of the greatest teams you can ever wish for - SAJC CANOEING.

hmmm the weekend was pretty interesting,

Saturday saw us with delayed trng that kinda pissed us off since there was the sundown briefing in the mrng, then came coach's dilly delly but nvm. no food for some, hypoglycaemia for weeling. But then came 30 paus and imba ice milos and horlicks, courtesy of mr. toh. thanks mr toh (:

good thing was that we've now got mr. peter. haha it's just like coach's dream come true man, someone with such experience IN HIS CLUB. woa. makes all the 10 Nelos look even better now. well coach then shared with us why he was willing to invest, hmm a great deed i must say, considering all the factors that his money can pursue. Such strong belief in sports, such passion, wooh, no one exceeds him. Oh yea then he went on to say, 生气是拿其他人错误处罚自己.

Mmmm, guess i needn say more, the phrase speaks for itself

ALRIGHT

today, oh fateful monday, 12th May. Happy Birthday Cheehao.

Ok the point is that the 3/4 the school was sent for Rugby finals against ACSI. They fought really hard as

you could see but ACSI just kept coming and kept control of the gameplay well. In my greatest (or rather,

OUR greatest) respect, the guys did well and we're proud of em.

Throughout the match, i can't help but keep drawing new experiences from the match, not rugby per

se, but what every sport needs - mentality.

Our Saints ruggers were all fired up while ACSI were all composed and confident. Heck the nits and grits

but what caught me most was what Jesse Quek said in the last 5 minutes of the game, with 2 tries away

from an equaliser, a miracle was in urgent need to realise. W/ passion and fervour, he told the team "THIS

round-up and GOSH that really infused a lot of power in them. After the successful line-up, it was the

furthest scrum up in the match as the props and locks just forced the rug on. Almost a try, but, lost

possession.

It immediately came to me, how strong that kind of motivation can be, at the last few minutes of your

play, giving your all. Surely, giving your all is natural, with so much trng and preparation. No doubt our

Saints really gave their all, their very best, but it wasn't enough. This thought immediately entailed what

might happen to us on the racetrack. Just that last burst, the craziest one you've ever did in your life but

you fail to hit the mark before another boat does...

Their best wasn't enough. Their best... Then came my thoughts, what then, could be the best? the best in

yourself that suffices to trounce others off the podium. Do you know what your best is? Will we only

know it come the finals, after the race when all the positions are fixed, when all the months of grit and

determination are chronicles of memories?

Let us not believe in our best, at the most crucial moment ever, for you've no idea how strong it will be.

Right at the moment, left with no choices, that belief invigorates hope, strength and everytyhing you need,

but the sad fact is that it's empty, insufficient and unrealistic.

Make your best, the best. Now, and forever.
